75 Calhoun Street is home to the Charleston County School Board. The immense diversity of their constituents ensures that the Board has a never-ending supply of controversial issues to consider. As a result, the Board's Hearing Room is typically filled to capacity or more and the last thing the board wants to worry about is whether or not their views can be heard. So they did the educated thing - they called Carolina Sound. We considered the many different ways in which the board would need to use the room over the life of the building and designed a system which was easy-to-use, feature-rich and ready for expansion. The system is based around the amazing modular capabilities of IRP's System 41. This single system houses automatic mixers, equalizers, distribution amplifiers, automatic gain controls, custom mixing circuits, and electronic room combining circuitry that is all transparent to the user. The room can be divided into two sections by pulling across a dividing wall. When the wall is in place, the sound system automatically divides itself into two totally separate sound systems. When the wall disappears, the sound system automatically combines the two rooms. The system features speakers by Lowell, power sequencing by Atlas-Soundolier, recorders and transcribers by Sony, microphones by Crown and Vega, hearing assistance by Williams, and amplification by TOA. A custom control/interface panel was designed so that users never need to bother the equipment racks, tucked away out of site. Since the system would often be featured on television, Carolina Sound created beautiful custom-carved wood microphone stands which feature a cough-button and a mute control for the chairperson. Speakers in the lobby area accommodate overflow crowds.A similar system graces the Board room on the third floor. The Charleston County School Board hears complaints about a lot of things during the year, but one thing they never hear complaints about is their Carolina Sound systems. |
